Xeric Nasa Trappist-1 Kickstarter

Last year I backed a Kickstarter campaign ran by watch maker Xeric Watches; they created an awesome ISS inspired ‘Trappist-1 Nasa Edition’ watch to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the famous Apollo 11 mission. After a few months of delays due to the pandemic, mine finally arrived last week - I went for the Neutron Star colourway variant and I love it!

I’ve never really tried my hand at product / still life photography, so in receiving such an awesome timepiece, it seemed only right to give it a go and see what I could come up with. My wife is awesome at advertising / product photography, so she gave a few tips, tricks and lots of feedback (which at time was brutally honest, but needed!)

The watch face looks completely different when the lights go down, with luminous hands and a constellation background, so I got some long exposures to really show off the glow. The domed hesalite front caused a few headaches initially, as everything in the room was being shown in the reflection, so I decided to use those reflections to my advantage for a couple of shots, using an iPad to reflect images of Earth back onto the watch.

Even the back of the watch is a thing of beauty, showcasing an engraved commemorative artwork paying homage to the original Apollo 11 mission patch the astronauts wore on their suits.

The next challenge is to get the slider out and see how I get on filming the Trappist-1.

Thanks for stopping by and checking out these shots, still a lot to learn, but had a lot of fun!

I’m really pleased with how the shots came out, using no more than an iPad and a single mini Apurture MC light, with a couple of Interfit strobes, all taken on the Lumix S1 with a variety of lenses (Lumix 24-105, Canon 180mm Macro, 70-200, 24mm Tilt Shift and 50mm).
